John Williams Ogden 1859-1936 Oil Landscape
We are delighted to offer this lovely landscape oil on canvas by the British/Canadian artist Reverend John Williams Ogden, who has signed the painting J. W. Ogden in the lower left hand corner and inscribed it verso on the stretcher. Unfortunately, we cannot read all of the inscription except for the last word 'Vale'.
This is one of a matched pair of paintings by this artist that we will be listing.
The Reverend John Williams Ogden 1859-1936, was born in Batley, Yorkshire, the son of a Methodist Minister, who had the young John preaching by the age of 14. He was ordained in 1883, the year of his marriage to Emily Glover Mann (1883-1912), with whom he had two daughters, Emmie and Fannie. Emily died in 1912 and he subsequently married Marion Joslin in 1915 in Keighley, Yorkshire.
By 1891 John and Emily were living in Alnwick, Northumberland and in the 1891 Census, he was listed as a Methodist Minister. In 1901, he was listed as a Wesleyan Minister and was living at 6 Albury Park Road, Tynemouth, Northumberland. In 1911, he was listed as a Preacher and Lecturer and was living at 62 Highbury, Newcastle on Tyne.
He left the UK in 1920 to emigrate to Canada with his new wife Marion by lst Class passage on the SS Cairnmona from Fowey. They settled in Vancouver, where he continued to preach and to paint. There is an interesting story about his life in Canada on google under the heading 'History of Vancouver - John Williams Ogden.
His work seems to be well appreciated in Canada and a 38" x 26" of Capilano Canyon sold at Waddingtons in Toronto for over 10,000 Canadian Dollars. He was an avid landscape painter of the lakes and mountains of British Columbia. His daughter Fannie also became an artist, known in Canada, as she obviously joined her father in that country.
The painting is framed in a 2 3/8" gilt frame and slip and will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
Image size: 16 7/8" x 14 3/4" - 43cm x 37.5cm
Frame size: 21 3/4" x 19 5/8" - 55.25cm x 49.8cm
