John C.Uren 1845-1932 W/Colour Trebarwith Sands
We are offering for sale this lovely watercolour by the Cornish artist John Clark Isaac Uren, who has signed the painting J. C. Uren in the lower right hand corner and entitled it verso Trebarwith Sands North Cornwall. The painting depicts a view of the south end of the one mile stretch of sand (at low tide) known as Trebarwith Strand. There are some figures on the beach, as well as some donkeys, which were used to collect sand in panniers, which was used by local farmers on their fields, as well as to provide traction for the heavy slate wagons on the steep road through the village. You can actually see the long handled shovels used to dig the sand attached to the donkeys' panniers. There are some images of this sand collection at Trebarwith on google images.
There are two clinker built boats drawn up on the sand, one with a fisherman working inside, and a fisherman with his rod, trudging up the track to what may well be a storage hut for the fishermen, which is perched on the edge of the crag.
John Clark Isaac Uren, was born on May 10th in Truro, the son of James Uren, a journeyman painter. He was painting in Tremorna and St. Ives, and specialised in coastal and marine paintings of Devon and Cornwall, primarily in watercolours. In 1881 and 1891 he was living at 5 Cornwall Terrace, Penzance with his wife Eliza Catherine and his young family. In all he and Eliza had 10 children. He must have been reasonably successful, as from 1881 until at least 1911 (the year of the last census available) he always had one or two servants.
By 1901, he had moved to No. 11 Connaught Avenue, Plymouth and was still there in 1911. However he died on 14th March 1932 in Penzance at the age of 86.
He exhibited at the Royal Cornwall Polytechnic Society in Falmouth in 1878 and was well represented at the Opening Exhibition of the Newlyn Art Gallery in 1895. He also exhibited two paintings at The Royal Academy and 3 at the New Watercolour Society.
