JohN C. Uren 1845-1932 Watercolour Kynance Cove
We are offering for sale this lovely watercolour by the Cornish artist John Clarke Isaac Uren, who has signed the painting J. C. Uren in the lower left hand corner and entitled it verso 'Lion Rock, Kynance Cove, The Lizard. Kynance Cove is a cove on the eastern side of Mount's Bay, Cornwall, England. It is situated on the Lizard peninsula approximately two miles north of Lizard Point. Please note that the artist is very well known as John CLARKSON Isaac Uren, but his correct name is John Clarke Isaac Uren. This is one of a pair of Cornish watercolours by this artist that we are listing.
John Clarke Isaac Uren, was born on May 10th, 1845 in Truro, the son of James Uren, a journeyman painter. He was painting in Tremorna and St. Ives, and specialised in coastal and marine paintings of Devon and Cornwall, primarily in watercolours. In 1881 and 1891 he was living at 5 Cornwall Terrace, Penzance with his wife Eliza Catherine and his young family. In all he and Eliza had 10 children, one of whom died. He must have been reasonably successful, as from 1881 until at least 1911 (the year of the last census available) he always had one or two servants.
By 1901, he had moved to No. 11 Connaught Avenue, Plymouth and was still there in 1911. By the Census of 2021, they family of John, his wife, one son Clarence and his daughter May, were living at 8, Clarence Street, Penzance. However he died on 14th March 1932 in Penzance at the age of 86, possibly at this address.
He exhibited at the Royal Cornwall Polytechnic Society in Falmouth in 1878 and was well represented at the Opening Exhibition of the Newlyn Art Gallery in 1895. He also exhibited two paintings at The Royal Academy and 3 at the New Watercolour Society.
Two of his marine watercolours are in the National Collection and may be viewed at ArtUK.org.

The painting is double mounted with washlines and is framed in a 7/16 inch gilt frame. It will be supplied with new brass hangers, new brass picture wire and will be ready to hang.
