James, Leigh Small Longcase / Grandfather Clock

1 of 6
An early 18th century longcase grandfather antique clock of smaller proportions. Nice patina to the golden oak case with a flat hood pediment with fretwork to the hood and side doors. Turned hood side columns. An arched, recessed, chamfered trunk door with a glass lenticle showing the pendulum. A well detailed 11" brass and silvered dial with engraving around the date and a seconds dial. Early crown and cherub dial corner spandrels. A 30m hour, rope driven mechanism with well turned pillars striking the hours on a bell. Circa 1710.
Height 6ft 8 "/ 203 cms Depth 11 " / 28 cms Width (at widest point of the hood) 19 1/2" / 50 cms
The silvered chapter ring is signed 'James Leigh Fecit' and is recorded in Loomes 'Watch and Clockmakers of The World' book as working circa 1700. The author suggests it is James of Leigh (Lancashire) rather that James, Leigh a maker!
