J. Callingham British Marine Watercolour 1879
We are delighted to offer for sale this beautifully executed and atmospheric marine watercolour by the artist J. CALLINGHAM, who has signed and entitled the painting 'Atmosphere at Night' and dated it 1879 on the reverse of the painting. The painting depicts a sailing vessel, crewed by three men, going out to sea, with a larger sailing galleon in the background, with a further vessel to the right. The moon is gleaming from behind the clouds and reflecting in the water. This is a really superb watercolour.
J. Callingham is a listed artist, who lived in Surbiton, Surrey and exhibited three watercolours between 1873 and 1879 at Suffolk Street and it is possible that this is one of them, as according to his recent auction results, he appears to have switched to painting in oils. He specialised in marine scenes. Other than this, we have been unable to uncover further biographical information about him but are continuing to research.
The painting has been newly double mounted to complement and is newly framed in a 1 1/8" antiqued gilt frame to suit. It is ready to hang.
