I. M. Orientalist Oil On Canvas 19th C. Arab Army I M Monogrammist 19th Century %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
We are offering for sale this quite dramatic 19th Century Oil on Canvas laid to board by the artist I.M., who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner with his monogram. The painting depicts a large Arab army on Camel Back travelling through the desert at sunset, with a range of mountains in the background. There are several people walking alongside the foremost camels, but the warrior in obvious charge of the column is riding to the right of the rest. The whole column of riders appear to be armed with lances.

Regarding the I.M. monogram, we consulted Peter Nahum's book of Victorian Painters' Monograms and there was only one listed for I.M. and that was John Blake MacDonald RSA RSW 1929-1901. However, we are only cautiously attributing it to this artist, who we know visited Venice but in the biographries we have read, there is no mention of him visiting north Africa or the Middle East. However, it may have been taken from an etching or an engraving of a similar scene, as there were the famous paintings and lithographs of another Scottish artist David Roberts RA 1796-1864, which were part of the 'Egyptomania' of the 19th Century.

John Blake Macdonald was born in Boharm, Morayshire in 1829. On moving to Edinburgh to pursue an interest in art, he entered the Academy of the Board of Trustees in 1853 under Lauder. He then studied life at the School of the Royal Scottish Academy, where he won lst prize for painting from life.

He painted portraits, landscapes and scenes from Scottish History, particularly from the Jacobite period. In 1874 he visited Venice where he painted several watercolours which he exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy. After 1878, he gave up figure painting to concentrate on pure landscapes in oils and watercolours.

He was elected an Associate Member of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1863 and a Full Member in 1877. He was also a Member of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour.

He exhibited at the Royal Academy 1866-1876 (6 works) and at the Royal Scottish Academy (76 works).

He died in Edinburgh on 20th December 1901.

His biographical details are listed in The Dictionary of Scottish Painters, The Dictionary of British Watercolour Artists by H. Mallalieu, The Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood and The Dictionary of British Artists (Collectors' Club).

The painting has been newly framed in a 3 1/2" silver gilt frame which suits it very well. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
