H.C.Innes Fripp 1867-1963 Oil Madonna and Child
We are delighted to offer for sale this beautiful oil painting on canvas by the renowned artist Henry Charles Innes Fripp, who has signed the painting Innes Fripp in the lower right hand corner. The painting depicts a garden scene, with the Madona kneeling in front of the Christ Child, who is laying on a white cloth against an ornate sundial. Behind the Madonna is an orange tree and behind the sundial are some white lillies and a small lemon tree. The Madonna is wearing a crimson robe, with a blue cloak and a white head covering. She has a loving expression on her face and her hands are outstretched towards the Child.
Henry Charles Innes Fripp, was born in Clifton, Bristol on the 19th November 1867, the son of Samuel Charles Fripp (1812-1882), the architect and sculptor and nephew of the artist George Arthur Fripp (1813-1896). He studied at Bristol School of Art, the Royal College of Art in Kensington and in Paris. He was an assistant principal at the Royal College of Art (1892-5). He taught drawing and painting at Lambeth school of Art 1894-c.1930. He was Professor of Art at Queen's College, Harley Street, London.
He illustrated 'Human Anatomy for Art Students' by his cousin, the eminent surgeon Sir Alfred Downing Fripp (1865-1930). He was a Decorative Pictorial and Portrait painter and stained glass illustrator.
He exhibited 19 works at the Royal Academy between 1893 and 1946. He also exhibited 5 paintings at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, 17 at the Dudley Gallery, 1 at Manchester City Art Gallery, 2 at the New Gallery and 21 at the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour.
He was living at 60 Oxberry Avenue Fulham in 1891, 21 Joubert Mansions, Jubilee Place, London in 1894, but his studio was at Kennington Studios, Prince's Square London SE between 1897 and 1946. He died in London on 13th January 1963 at the age of 95.
There are 36 listings for his work at artprice and various at the other auction sites. His paintings with a religious or historical theme seem to attract the highest prices.
The painting is newly framed in a 5" decorative, but subtly coloured frame and will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
