Grandmother clock with Rocking Ship Dial
A delightful small longcase clock, standing only 166cms high, with a rocking ship automaton in the arch of the dial.
The antique clock dates from around the turn of the 1900s, a time when short longcase antique clocks were made in small numbers. The mahogany case has an elegant swan-neck pediment and brass-capped Corinthian columns to the hood. The slim trunk and base have reeded canted corners, with a very nice ogee moulding separating the two case parts.
The 8″ brass dial has an engraved centre, a silvered chapter ring with Roman hours and Arabic minute numerals, and brass cherub-head spandrels to the corners. The arch is painted with a seascape and a separate painted ship, attached to the pendulum, rocks to and fro through the waves in time with the beat of the antique clock.
The eight-day weight driven movement strikes has an anchor escapement, striking the hours on a bell. It is to be overhauled and guaranteed for 3 years.
