Grace Hastie SWA 1839-1926 W/colour Cumbria 1877 Grace H Hastie Grace Harriet Hastie Watercolour %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
We are offering this lovely, subtly toned watercolour landscape by the artist Grace H. Hastie, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner and dated it 1877. As the gallery who framed the painting entitled it verso, as shown, we presume that the artist had given the location 'Tongue Ghyll Beck - Westmoreland' on the back. As the framing was done with great care, we have not disturbed it to check. The painting depicts the beck and some of its waterfalls descending from the hills and two fishermen, one with a rod and line out, fishing in a pool.

This is one of a pair of watercolours by this artist that we will be listing.

Grace Harriet Hastie, was born on the 10th April, 1839 in Bishopsgate, London the eldest child of a solicitor named James Hastie (1900-1859) and his wife Julia Catherine (nee Singer) (1816-1904). She was named after her paternal grandmother. By 1851, they were living at 1 Grove Hill Terrace, Camberwell and she had a brother aged 5. By 1861, she was shown in the census to be a 22 year old governess and living with her widowed mother at 2 Springfield Terrace, Camberwell. In the census of 1871 she and her mother were living at 216 The Grove, St. Giles, Camberwell with her brother James Hepburn Hastie (1845-1901), who was a clerk at the War Office and they had 2 servants. Grace was listed as a teacher.

In 1881 she and her mother and 3 servants were still living at the same address and Grace was listed as an artist. By 1891 Grace and her mother were living with her widower brother and his two sons at 8 Cahmpion Park Camberwell, a large house with 4 servants. Her brother was now a senior clerk at the War Office. In 1901, Grace, still painting, was living with her brother, now retired from the civil service, her mother aged 84, one of her nephews Cecil aged 23 and 4 servants.

In the final census that we can view, Grace, aged 71, was living with her single nephew Cecil H. Hastie-Robertson at 39 Arundel Gardens, Notting Hill with 3 servants and she was still listed as an artist. She died on the 16th April, 1926 at the same address.

Grace was a prolific watercolourist and was known for her beautiful depictions of flowers and fruits, as well as landscapes. She was elected Associate Member of the Society of Women Artists in 1880 and a full Member in 1889. Examples of her work are in the British Museum.

She is listed in The Dictionary of British Artists (Collectors' Club), The Dictionary of Victorian Painters, by Christopher Wood, The Dictionary of Watercolour Artists by Mallalieu and Artists in Newlyn & West Cornwall by Hardie 2009. She exhibited 253 paintings at the Society of Women Artists, 18 at The Royal Academy, 8 at The Royal Scottish Academy, 4 at the Glasgow Institution, 6 at The Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, 7 at the Royal Society of British Artists, and many other provincial exhibitions.
