A mid 19th Century gorge case carriage antique clock having a polished brass case, with thick bevel edge glass panels. It has a white enamel dial with five minute markers. The 8 day movement strikes the hours and halves on a gong and has an hour repeat button. The clock has its original lever platform. Made by Achilles Brocot,a famous Clockmaker of the 19th Century.
Provenance
Achille Brocot (1817–1878) was a French clockmaker and amateur mathematician.He is known for his discovery (independently of and contemporaneously with German number theorist Moritz Stern) of the Stern–Brocot tree, a mathematical structure useful in approximating real numbers by rational numbers this sort of approximation is an important part of the design of gear ratios for antique clocks. He also made many other horological innovations including refinement of his father Louis-Gabriel's Brocot escapement and the development of antique clocks with perpetual calendar mechanisms.
