Gilt Rotunda Mantle Clock With Glass Dome by Pons
A very striking antique French gilt brass rotunda mantle antique clock under its original glass dome c1885. The clock has a domed canopy with finial, supported by six fluted columns surrounding its encased movement. Applied repoussé detail around the upper part of its base above alternate matt and polished gilt bands. Brass on its lower base (below dome) patinated to a rich-brown finish. Replacement cast brass Helios head pendulum bob (copied from an antique original). White enamelled dial with roman numerals and breguet hands with classically decorated bezel. Single train, 10-day timepiece movement with backplate stamped “MEDAILLE D’OR 1827 Pons” relating to a previously awarded prize. The clock measures 41 cm to top of its dome. Base (maximum) is 23.5 cm in diameter. Excellent time-keeper.
Fully restored and serviced. The clock's movement is covered by our 12-month warranty within the UK.
This clock is in overall very good condition commensurate with age. It retains its original gilt finish which shows some minor signs of age. The glass dome is in very good condition with some very minor chips to its bottom rim which are not visible when the dome is located. No damaged to the dial. Please see images as these form an important part of the description.
Pierre-Honoré-César PONS (Paris, 1773 – 1851). At thirty, Pons set up shop as a clockmaker on rue de la Huchette in Paris. Known for his outstanding quality, Pons’ work had considerable influence on numerous renowned French clockmakers. In 1807 he was assigned by the State to revive the clockmaking industry of Saint-Nicolas-d'Aliermont, an important horology centre, near Dieppe. Pons introduced machinery and production line methods for his Paris-style movements, which enabled the considerable increase in production required to supply the new industrial bourgeoisie’s strong demand for mantel antique clocks. He succeeded in developing the industry while his participation at the Paris exhibitions earned him numerous awards for his perfectly crafted movements and remarkable precision timepieces. He received a Silver Medal in 1819 and 1823, and a Gold Medal in 1827, 1834, 1839 and 1844. After his death, the firm continued under the direction of Borromée Delépine – continuing to use the Pons name with their latest recorded ‘madaille’ awarded in 1900.
