A Rare Georgian Painted Dial Bracket Clock with Pull Repeat by Samuel Birley c1820

The beautiful patina mahogany case with fire gilt ormolu caryatids, Hand finished finials, fretwork panels to the upper door and stunning "Sun God" hand finished gilt fretwork panels to the sides. The rear door is glazed so that the unusual movement can be seen.
The case has been carefully cleaned to remove the many years of dirt, dust and grime to reveal its original shellac finish and looks splendid.
This is a very interesting and rare antique clock in respect of the dial which demonstrates the early use of the painted dial which had been invented only a few years earlier to compete with the popular and also recently used silvered sheet brass dials and the more usual brass chapter ring and spandrel type.
What most people don't realise that these dials were hand made and equal or more in price compared to brass dials. The gold gesso work is slightly raised and the execution of the black-work exquisite.
These early painted dials are works of art and should not be confused with the factory made ones popular in the 19th Century.
The clock features a strike/silent lever to the arch and a pull repeat mechanism ( cord not attached - customer to specify colour )

The double fusee five knopped pillar movement is very well made with fine wheels and pinions and displays a finely engraved backplate, The backplate with the name Samuel Birley, Birmingham along with a wheat ear pattern to the edge. The movement has been fully overhauled by me personally and comes with a full three year guarantee for your peace of mind.
