George Wright 1860-1942 Oil English Civil War 80 George Wright 1860-1942 Oil Painting %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
We are delighted to offer for auction this dramatic and evocative oil on canvas by the artist GEORGE WRIGHT, who has signed the painting G. Wright to the lower right and dated it '80 for 1880. The painting is entitled on the stretcher verso 'Carrying Dispatches'. The paintings depicts a scene from the English Civil War, showing two Roundhead troopers galloping through the snow, both carrying leather bags containing dispatches. They are both wearing helmets, jerkins, thigh high boots and carrying swords. As would be expected of this artist, the horses have been executed superbly.

GEORGE WRIGHT (1860-1942) was born in Headingley near Leeds in 1860, the son of George E. and Elizabeth Wright. He was one of five children and his younger brother Gilbert Scott Wright was also an artist specialising in paintings of horses and dogs. It is believed that he learned from his brother and they had a friendly rivalry throughout their careers. His sister Louise was a pioneer fashion artist, who illustrated Fur Catalogues for Harrods and did illustrations for Vogue Magazine.

George specialised in sporting, coaching and hunting scenes and was known as one of the foremost equestrian artists of his time. He also painted at least a dozen scenes of the Civil War, one of which we have previously sold, and some dog portraits.

He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1892 (33 works), 6 paintings at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool and at other major exhibitions. From 1925 he was under commission by Ackermanns Gallery in London and the Grand Central Gallery in New York and had many exhibitions at both locations.

There are 11 of his paintings in the National Collection, including 2 Civil War oil paintings, which can be viewed at ArtUK.org.

He is listed in The Dictionary of British Artists, The Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood and The Dictionary of British Artist by Grant Waters. There is also a wealth of information available on google. His work frequently appeared in Hislop's Guide to the UK Art Market and in 2006, for example, the average price for one of his oils was £2,549, with the median price being £1,000.

George Wright lived in Rugby in 1901, Oxford after 1908, Richmond in Surrey by 1930 and then Seaford in Sussex, where he died in 1942.
