Fred. J. Knowles b.1874 W/colour Gypsy Camp
We are offering for sale this very detailed watercolour by the artist FREDERICK JAMES KNOWLES, who has signed the painting Fred. J. Knowles in the lower left hand corner and dated it 1902. The painting depicts a twilight scene, with two gypsy caravans camped for the night, their ponies grazing in the background. Three of the family members are sitting around their campfire, with a cooking pot over it, while a fourth member is looking over the door of the caravan. One of the caravans is of the curved type and the other is wood panelled with a window.
FREDERICK JAMES KNOWLES, was born in Manchester on the 4th August 1874 and resided at 117 Moss Lane, Moss Side, Manchester, although he later moved to Oswestry in Shropshire. He studied at The Cavendish School of Art. He was a landscape and figurative painter. Both his brother George Sheridan Knowles and his sister Juliet were painters.
He exhibited 1 painting at the Royal Academy,3 at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, 14 at the Manchester City Art Gallery, 19 at the Royal Cambrian Academy and 48 at the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour. He was a Member of the North British Academy.
