Cecil Keeling – 84th by the Road – Bridge over the Qara-Su – and Market at Taq-I-Bustan
Pencil and pen and ink with black and coloured chalks on white paper. All (3) pictures are datable to 1941 and are signed by the artist. Various labels attached. These drawings were reproduced as illustrations in the book ‘Pictures from Persia’ by Cecil Keeling, publ. by Robert Hale Ltd (1947). The book ‘Pictures of Persia’ contained memoirs from his wartime service, alongside 30 colour plates, a copy of the book (no dust jacket) is included with the sale of the drawings.
Details:
1. “84th by the Road” (Reproduced as the sixth plate in ‘Pictures from Persia’, p.36, as ‘Halt by the Roadside’.) 8 3/8 x 10 5/8 in. Thin white paper with various tears and loses on the edges of the sheet ‘top and bottom’. laid onto board. A typed label reads: Late Summer 1941. Probably between Shahabad and the Pa-i-Taq (Paytak) Pass, on the road towards Kermanshah from the Iraq/Persia frontier at Khanaqin.
2. “Bridge over the Qara-Su” (Reproduced as the sixth plate in ‘Pictures from Persia’, p.157, as the twenty-seventh plate, entitled ‘Route to the Hills’.) 8 7/16 x 10 1/2 in. Thin white paper with two small tears close to the bottom edge of the sheet, laid onto grey paper. A typed label reads: Possibly late Summer 1941, at the bridge on the Kermanshah-Hamadan Road between Kermanshah and Taq-i-Bustan, but more probably in late Autumn 1941, at the bridge on the same road, West of Hamadan, between Kangavar and Aradabad (Vide ‘Pictures from Persia, pp.91-93).
3. “Market at Taq-I-Bustan” (Reproduced as the ninth plate in ‘Pictures from Persia’, p.49, as ‘Market at Taq-i-Bustan’.) 8 7/16 x 10 1/2 in. Thin white paper with three tears and lose to top edge of the sheet, laid onto grey paper. A typed label reads: Late Summer 1941. Immediately across the Qareh-su River to the East of Kermanshah on the road towards Hamadan.
Cecil Keeling, born Teddington, Middlesex, studied at Putney School of Art (1930-34) and at Chelsea School of Art (1935-36) while working for a printing firm. He became a designer for the B.B.C. in 1937 and after wartime service, rejoined as a designer in the publicity department. He illustrated books using wood-engraving and coloured lithography (and later, more often scraperboard) for various publishers including for the Folio Society and Golden Cockerel Press. He undertook commissions for the advertising departments of firms including the I.C.I. and contributed to magazines including The Radio Times and The Listener. Member RE.SWE. Art Workers Guild (1945) and FSIA. Ref: Graphis 62: PLA 1976.
In 1947 his book ‘Pictures of Persia’ was published by Robert Hale Ltd. Printed by Cowell’s of Ipswich, the book contained memoirs from his wartime service there alongside 30 colour plates. PAYMENT OPTIONS

Great care and trouble has been taken to ensure that all details written for every picture are correct and the photos are of sufficient quality so that each item can be viewed in detail. If the purchaser can find a fault (by way of a photograph) as proof of damage in transit that is not present in our promotional photo i.e. a tear in the canvas, broken glass, broken frame, damage to surface of picture, then a full or part refund will be offered back to the purchaser depending on the extent of the damage. This will only apply within 24 hours of signing for the parcel.
If the parcel has arrived and appears to be damaged in some way please return the parcel to us (unopened) and we will refund the purchase price on receipt of the picture.
If the purchaser can prove with written evidence from three independent experts that our description was false or misleading in any way then a full refund will be offered back to the purchaser.
