Frank Bazeley 1868-1949 Oil Painting Autumn Scene
We are pleased to offer this atmospheric oil painting on canvas by the artist Frank Bazeley, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner. The painting depicts an autumnal sunset view with the remains of a bonfire, possibly burning fallen leaves, as the mist is falling. The painting has been very wll executed in the warm russet tones of the season.
Frank Bazeley was born in Cookham, near Maidenhead Berkshire on 25th June, 1868, the son of William and Mary Jane Bazeley. His father was a gardener and coachman. At the age of 12 Frank was working in Kensington as a pageboy for Lord Atwell. By the Census of 1891 he wa listed as an artistic metal work, similarly in the Census of 1901. In 1905, he married Truth Philippa nee Shenton and, in the 1911 Census, he was listed as a memorial tablet manufacturer, living with his wife at 2 Church Villas, High Sttreet, Yiewsley, Middx.
There are no more Census records that can be viewed untol next year, but Frank and Truth appear in the 1939 Register with Frank listed as an OAP and Truth running a boarding kennels for dogs and cats at the cottage where they lived - Weir Cottage, West Drayton, Middx.
Sadly, there was a fire in May 1942 at Weir Cottage, and although soldiers and the fire brigade managed to bring the fire under control, the cottage was gutted. Happily, most of the contents were saved, although many of Frank's paintings were burnt and the one that was exhibited at the Royal Academy was badly blistered. Frank had looked after the dogs and cats and all were unfarmed. Frank died in 1949 at the age of 80 and Truth is 1957.
Frank exhibited from 1905-1915, one at the Royal Academy and 1 at the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours, as he painted in both media. Probably Frank painted mostly for hisown pleasure and it may be the case that the reason that very few have appeared at auction, is that they were burnt in the fire mentioned above.
The painting is framed in a very nice 3 1/4 inch swept, pierced, Florentine gilt frame and gilt and velvet slip. It will be supplied with new brass picture wire and will be ready to hang.
Image size: 33 1/4 X 19 1/4 inches - 84.5cm X 49cm
Frame size: 38 1/4 x 25 1/2 inches - 97.15cm x 64.8cm
Medium: Oils on canvas
Condition: Very good. The canvas is clean and taut with some craquelure in the sky area and a slight stretcher mark across the top. The frame is in very good condition.
