Francis G. Fraser b. 1879 watercolour River View
We are pleased to offer for auction this superb watercolour by the artist FRANCIS GORDON FRASER, who has signed the painting F.G.Fraser in the lower left hand corner. This is one of a pair that we are currently listing and they are the finest and largest watercolours that we have seen by this artist. The painting depicts a tranquil river view, a subject for which he was well known, with high mountains and rocky banks. There are a couple of finely executed silver birch trees on the right hand bank and various birds in the sky and flying low over the river.
FRANCIS GORDON FRASER, who exhibited in 1907 at Elands Art Gallery in Exeter (both river landscapes), was a member of the famous Huntingdonshire family of artists and is believed to be the second son of Robert Winchester Fraser and was born on the 6th November 1879. His biographical information is listed in Hidden Talents, the excellent book by Jeremy Wood.
There appears to be some confusion over this artist's exact name. He is variously listed on the auction record sites as Francis Gordon, Francis George, Frederick G., F. Gordon, F.G. Fraser and F. Fraser, although the signatures are all the same. However, collectively, there are 11 listings on artnet.com, 50 on findartinfo.com, 88 on artprice.com and 17 on arcadja. com. His record price for a pair of watercolours was £598 at Christies in 2004 and for an oil, £657 at Bonhams in 2004.
The painting has been newly double mounted in two tone to complement and is newly framed in a 1 1/4" gilt frame. It is ready to hang.
