Fine 8 Day Marine Chronometer With Outer Case
This is a very fine and most rare mahogany eight day Marine Chronometer signed, Stanley , Great Turnstile , Holbourne W.C. (London) No. 2889, circa 1845, brass bound three-tier case, recessed side carrying handles, front with inscribed plaque STANLEY LONDON with a smaller plaque under inscribed 2 over 889, 4-3/4-inch silvered dial with Roman numerals, two dials for seconds and power reserve, single chain fusee movement with ``Earnshaws`` type spring detent escapement, free sprung helical hairspring, balance with weights and timing screws, diamond endstone ,spotted plates, ``Harrisons`` maintaining power. It was manufactured circa 1850.
? W.F Stanley was a remarkable person with many interests and a very successful businessman making scientific instruments. He held 78 Patents and used his great wealth to help others by founding various schools. There is a very interesting entry on Wikipedia about this great man.
? Although he received worldwide praise for his instruments he was not noted as a clockmaker but no doubt he would sell them to clients as they related to his instrument business . It is well documented that the number of actual marine chronometer manufacturers was very small due to immense skill required with many antique clocks being supplied to the retail trade .
? I am virtually certain that this is the case with this instrument with my educated guess being that it was made by the eminent maker John Poole but I am open to advise from experts in this field.
? What is very apparent in the absolute quality of this item . It is beautifully made throughout.
? Marine chronometers are rare items at the best of times due to their initial cost and specific use but the vast majority are 2 day duration and it is very uncommon indeed to find one with a running duration of 8 days.
It is equally rare to find any antique clock in such wonderful original condition . Unusually the original outer travelling case and leather strap are present and have obviously used in service as the inner three tier case case has survived in remarkeble condition retaining the laquer to the brass work and gimbals. The French polish is also totally original.
? I have had the movement very sypathetically serviced by a Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers and the dial silvered .It is in perfect working order. Otherwise the case has simply been waxed. I am certain that the condition with delight the most discerning client and although my images are reasonable the item is much nicer in the flesh and interested parties are urged to view if possible.
? The three tier cabinet is 9 inches tall , 8 inches wide and deep.
? If the asking price is paid in full I will ship the antique clock worldwide free of charge and provide a 12 months guarantee.
? If a lesser offer is accepted the it will be considered a trade sale with the item sold as described with shipping the responsibility of the buyer.
? Domestic buyers are requested to use alternative means of payment to Pay Pal if possible due to their charges
I will ship this clock worldwide.
