An extraordinarily rare Gellé Freres Art Deco compact made in the 1920s.
Where to begin with an antique compact with such a history?
At the beginning of course!
In 1826 Jean-Baptiste Augustin & Nicholas Willdeborde Gellé inherited the formulas & premises from Fargeon Young a descendent of Jean-Louis Fargeon who was the perfumer to Queen Marie-Antoinette & loyal to the end.
Gellé Freres were Gold Medal winners Paris 1878 Paris 1889 Hors Concours Gellé Freres 6 avenue de l'Opéra PARIS.
As you can imagine this perfume house has a tremendously well documented history & they are still in business today as a high end perfumerie...........books of history!
We provide historical fact sheets with all purchases & this antique compact has a huge & lavishly illustrated historical fact pack which has taken an age to research & produce.
A very impressive history & this may be the only time you see this one for sale in this condition.
The lid could just not be any more Art Deco!
A complex design made up of tiny chevrons with a stylized flower made up of intersecting circles. The whole piece has a glorious patina which makes it look like gold. All clasps & hinges work perfectly. The mirror is good. The interior is beautifully gilded & the original puff & powder plate comes as a real bonus. The compact is signed 'GELLE FRERES FRANCE'. The base has a stylish design made up of bold & fine vertical lines.
This rare antique French vanity measures 2" & weighs 34.6 grams.
