Extremely rare 1953 Royal Coronation compact
Extremely rare 1953 Royal Coronation compact QUEEN ELIZABETH II powder compact memorabilia
A fabulous vintage loose powder compact made with Queen Elizabeth's Coronation in mind.
This is very rare & I do not think you will see another just like it. The lid is such a wonderful tribute to Queen Elizabeth II - it shows the symbols of state in fine detail.
They are
The Sword of State - the pommel, grip, cross guard are a rich gold as is the chape of the scabbard. The rest of the scabbard is a glorious red with gold symbols. At the bottom of the Sword of State in red letters '1953' the Coronation year. The Sword of State was used as part of the regalia symbolizing the power of a monarch to use the might of the state against its enemies, and the duty of the monarch to preserve right and peace.
The Imperial State Crown - this symbolises the sovereignty of the monarch. You can see the crosses pattée alternating with the fleurs-de-lis & the purple velvet cap with the ermine border.
The Orb - which is regalia known as a globus cruciger ( a cross bearing orb). The Orb is a religious symbol that represents the Monarch's role as Defender of the Faith. Spanning the Orb are pearls & gemstones this design is continued in a half-band which ends where an amethyst is surmounted by a Cross.
St Edward's Crown - this is considered to be the principal piece of Regalia being the crown traditionally used in the coronation of British monarchs including Queen Elizabeth II. This crown represents the authority of the sovereign over the Commonwealth.
The Ampulla and Anointing Spoon - these are the two oldest objects used in the coronation. The Ampulla is a vessel made in the shape of an eagle made from gold. The vessel contains holy oil which is poured through the beak. The Ampulla is said to date from the fourteenth century, although it was restored for the coronation of Charles II in 1661. The Anointing Spoon is used to anoint the monarch.
The Royal Sceptre with the Cross - presents the temporal authority of the Monarch under the Cross. It contains includes the second largest diamond in the world, the Cullinan I ( Great Star of Africa) which weighs over 106 grams - 530 carats!
The Sceptre with the Dove which symbolises spiritual authority of the Monarch. During the Coronation ceremony Queen Elizabeth II held the Sceptre with the Cross in her right hand & the Sceptre with the Dove in her left hand while the Archbishop of Canterbury places St. Edward's Crown on her head.
All the images of Royal Regalia on the lid are in very good condition with no loss of design as they have been well protected by a layer of lacquer.
The lid itself has some scratches & around the edges of the lid are areas of wear to the lacquer. This is such a remarkable piece of Royal memorabilia it does not concern me one bit.
All clasps & hinges work perfectly. The mirror gives a good clear reflection with a couple of age spots. The mirror is surrounded by a pretty gilt bezel inscribed 'MADE IN GREAT BRITAIN'. The powder well is protected by the original paper insert & the original good quality sifter is present too, it is in good condition & means this compact may be used with loose face powder. The base has an attractive guilloche design (a few age related marks that may well polish out). This very special compacts comes with an immaculate black velvet drawstring pouch to protect it.
Measures 3 1/2" & weighs 195.2 grams.
