English Dial Clock with Ebonised & Mahogany Case
![](http://images.antiquesatlas.com/b_sold.png)
![](http://staticaz.antiquesatlas.com/images/loading_new.gif)
A late Victorian English dial antique clock with an unusual ebonised dial surround.
The backbox is of mahogany, with hinged side and base access doors. The grain of the dial surround is clearly oak. Oak would have been used in preference to mahogany as the surround was to be ebonised, thus avoiding the unnecessary additional expense of mahogany. There are three pegs to hold the dial/movement assembly to the backbox, two on one side, one on the other.
The 8-day fusee movement has rectangular plates, and is photographed here prior to its overhaul.
The original 12-inch painted dial is signed for George Hammer & Co., 370, Strand, London, a company of school (and church) furnishers.
Spun brass bezel fitted with flat glass.
A notice was placed in the London Gazette on February 9,1894, that the company George Hammer & Co. was dissolved on 2nd December 1893 following the death of Edward John Hammer. The clock therefore pre-dates 1893.
