Emily R. Stones ASWA Watercolour Narcissus Ex. RA Emily R Stones ASWA 1852-1925 %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
We are pleased to offer for sale this lovely watercolour by the artist Emily Rebecca Stones ASWA, who has signed the painting in the lower left hand corner. The painting depicts an earthenware round vase, with a part turquoise glaze, filled with a profusion of Narcissi. It has been beautifully painted and the flowers seem real.

It is entitled verso Narcissus and was apparently exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1904, or so the typed card that came with the painting stated. The artist's original label is also provided, giving her address as 31 Parkhurst Road, Holloway, London N, where she was living with her mother. The painting was painted earlier than 1904, because by 1901, she was living at 276 Camden Road.

Emily Rebecca Stones was born in 1852 in London. She studied art at the Female School of Art in Queen Square circa 1878. She was a painter, primarily in watercolours, of flower subjects and landscapes.

The Royal Female School of Art was a professional institution for the training of women in fine art. It was founded in 1842, as part of the Government School of Design, predecessor of the Royal College of Art. When that moved from Somerset House to South Kensington in 1858, the female branch was physically split away to a different site, though remaining part of the main institution, until 1909 when it was transferred to the control of London County Council, initially via the The Central School of Arts and Crafts (now part of the University of the Arts London), with which it was merged from 1914. It was known by several names and was housed in Queen Square and Gower Street.

She came from a family who were reasonably comfortable and after her mother was widowed, she was living on private means, which Emily inherited, because by 1911, she was still living at 276 Camden Road alone, but with one maid in a 9 roomed 4 storey semi-detached house, which is still standing.

She exhibited from 1882-1925 as follows: Dudley Gall.5, Glasgow Institution 1, Walker Gall, Liverpool 7, Manchester City AG 5, Royal Academy 6, RBA 12, Royal Hibernian Academy 1, Royal Institute 13, Royal Oil Painters Institute 1, Royal Scottish Academy 1, Society of Women Artists 65, Walker's Gall. 48. In 1914, she was elected an Associate Member of the Society of Women Artists. She visited Venice, as she exhibited a painting of that city, and was quite a prolific painter. She died in Eastbourne on the 9th May, 1925, leaving the quite considerable sum of £12,379. She never married.

Her profile is listed in The Dictionary of British Artists (Collectors' Club), The Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood and her exhibition history in London exhibitions up to 1893 in Graves Dictionary.

The painting has been newly double mounted in two tone acid-free mountboard and is framed in a 1" gilt frame. It will be supplied with new brass hangers, new brass picture wire and will be ready to hang.
