Edwardian Silver Cream Jug, Charles Boyton, 1910
This is a very elegant small Edwardian Sterling Silver Cream Jug with an angular handle and a pedestal base. It is one of the interesting transitional pieces where design was moving gradually from Art Nouveau towards Art Deco, which would go on to dominate the later interwar years.
The cream jug is made in London by the renowned firm of silversmiths Charles Boyton & Son and dates to 1910, the last year of the Edwardian period. Founded back in 1825, by 1910 the company was under the management of the fourth generation of Charles Boytons. They have a well deserved reputation for producing stylish silverware of the very best quality.
Condition is good with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after 110 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The cream jug is 5.5cm / 2.2ins high, 9.5cm / 3.7ins from lip to handle and 6.1cm / 2.4ins in diameter across the top rim. It weighs a very respectable 45.3g / 1.6oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the body near to the handle are clear to read, although the makers' mark is a little rubbed away. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter p for 1910 and the C B & S in a trefoil makers' mark for Charles Boyton & Son.
Shipping in the UK is £6 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For Parcel Post.
