Edwardian Silver Bread Basket, Sheffield, 1910
Here we have a very elegant Edwardian Sterling Silver Bread Basket. It is in the form of an oblong with rounded corners and sweeping sides, which have both pierced and chased decoration. There is a discreet later inscription low down on the side which reads 1918 - McL - 1943. This was probably a long service gift and, silver being extremely hard to come by in 1943, an earlier piece has been engraved.
The bread basket is a well made piece in a good heavy gauge of silver. It is made by Ollivant & Botsford and assayed in Sheffield in 1910. Founded around 1900, Ollivant & Botsford were based in St Ann Street, Manchester but as Manchester didn't have an assay office items were sent to Sheffield or Chester to be marked. They remained in business into the mid-1970s.
Condition is very good with just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 110 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The basket is 21.5cm / 8.5ins long, 17.2cm / 6.8ins wide and stands 4.9cm / 1.9ins high. It weighs in at a very substantial 295.2g / 10.4oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the inside of the basket, are crisp and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the Gothic date letter s for 1910 and the Ot & Bd makers' mark for Ollivant & Botsford.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the bread basket.
