We are delighted to offer this lovely watercolour by the artist EDWARD CHARLES CLIFFORD, who has signed the painting Edward C. Clifford in the lower right hand corner and entitled it verso 'One of Nelson's men'. The painting depicts Strand on the Green at Chiswick in London, with the river Thames to the left, and a Midshipman from Nelson's Navy, with his arm in a sling, walking with his mother. He is wearing the typical Midshipman's rig of the time and there are many figures either at their gates, or turning round to look at this hero. The houses to the right are typical, with their overhanging upper rooms. To the left, there is a boatman in his boat and, sitting on the edge of the river, is a young girl wearing a blue bonnet.

We are sure of the exact location of this painting, as the artist had painted another scene of Strand on the Green, which we have seen.

This painting has been executed with considerable skill and the detail of the faces, particularly, is excellent.

EDWARD CHARLES CLIFFORD 1858-1910, was a London painter and illustrator. He exhibited from 1891 at the Royal Academy, Suffolk Street and the New Watercolour Society. He was elected a full Member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour in 1899 and a Member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1896.

He produced illustrations and wrote essays for the Art Journal and similar magazines and published 'Trees and Tree Drawing in 1909.

He was Secretary of the Artists' Society and the Langham Sketching Club and was one of the Principals of the Berry Art School.

Auction results for the work of this artist may be found at the usual sites, although his work does not often come to the market. However, a 9" x 5" watercolour of parkland by him achieved £1,200 at Sotheby's in 1986 and a watercolour portrait of a lady standing, made £4,200 in 1997, also at Sotheby's.

The painting has been newly double mounted in two-tone to complement and is newly framed in a 1 1/8" dull, mottled gilt frame to suit. It is ready to hang.
