Edna Best 1930's Art Pottery Jug for Lawleys
A rare hand painted art deco jug signed 'Edna Best' Art Pottery. Made exclusively for Lawley's department store by Pearl Pottery. 4.5 inches (12cm) high and 6 inches (15cm) wide. In excellent condition with no chips, cracks, nibbles, paint loss or crazing. A small raised piece of clay on the base from the factory firing process but of no consequence and two spots where the glaze has not covered. One of them on the spout as shown in the last photo but definitely not a chip. In wonderful vintage condition from the early 1930's.
In the 1930's Lawleys of London wanted their own range of pottery wares to compete with the popular Clarice Cliff. To add importance to the range which was produced by Pearl Pottery Burslem, they reached an agreement with stage and screen star Edna Best to include her signature on the base of each piece. The story that follows is a little sketchy and unsubstantiated, but it is said that Colley Shorter (Clarice Cliffs husband) who owned the Newport Pottery factory producing Clarice Cliff wares, was so incensed at the blatant copying of his range, he purchased and destroyed as many Edna Best pieces as he could obtain. The result is that there is very little Edna Best pottery on the market today and as such ( with such an interesting story ) has become highly collectable.
