Drocourt Grande Sonnerie Carriage Clock Calendar
We are pleased to offer this fine and very rare engraved Gorge cased carriage antique clock of French manufacture dating from the second half of the 19th Century made by perhaps the finest carriage clock makers , Drocourt of Paris , and the clock bears their stamp on the back plate of the movement and their serial number of 23400. Interestingly engraved down then side of the front plate is Le Roy et Fils, Paris Royal , Paris with the number 13600 which is also repeated on the back plate. This obvious collaboration of these two fine makers is also recorded and discussed by Derek Roberts in his reference book of Carriage Clocks
It has the complications of Grande Sonnerie chiming on every quarter and has a lever under the base to select silence or petite Sonnierre striking . The striking can be repeated at will by a push button on the top of the clock
At the bottom of the making are three subsidiary dials for month , alarm setting and date. On a clock of such complexity it is very rare to find such calendar work.
The beautifully gilded Gorge case is very finely engraved and the perfect porcelain dials enhanced by a similar masking
As can be seen from the images the clock is perfect condition (I am very cautious about describing any antique as perfect - but this example is as close as any antique can be ) having been professionally serviced by Overton Clocks of Chesterfield to ensure long term customer satisfaction
It really is very uncommon to find such complications on a carriage clock and it would have been very expensive indeed when new. A near identical clock by Drocourt was sold in Bonhams auction on 9th July 2014 for £9500 - and auctions do not guarantee authenticity nor provide guarantee functionality! They don't provide any redress if the clock is broken and such complex antique clocks are very expensive to repair
The clock is 7 inches tall to the very top of the handle and 5 3/4 (handle down) ,3 7/8 inches wide and 3 3/8 inches deep making it suitable to be placed anywhere.
The clock is totally genuine
