Dorothy Buckley Butterfly Wing Picture Fairies

1 of 6
We are offering for sale this large and quite rare, Art Deco, fairytale, butterfly wing painting by the artist Dorothy Buckley, who has signed the painting on one of the stones of the path, as shown. (Funnily enough, she has left the t out of her Christian name, but, as she was painting it in reverse, this is not that surprising.) The scene depicts a magician with long white hair and flowing robes, carrying an umbrella, with a fairy perched on top and surrounded by children, some of whom are picking flowers. They are walking with him through a forest along a path, that leads to the turretted castle in the right background and to which he is pointing with his left hand. There is an elf in the foreground amidst the poppies and another sitting on the handle of his umbrella. Although we have seen several pictures depicting the Pied Piper of Hamelin, this scene appears to be unusual.
The paintings were made by reverse painting the design onto glass, in a similar fashion to the verre eglomise black and gold glass insets to frames much beloved by the Victorians. The areas left unpainted were then backed by the butteffly wings in appropriate colours.
On researching Dorothy Buckley, we have found that she appears to have been one of the three major artists working in Birmingham for Shipton & Co. the antique jewellery chain, as a patent was applied for in 1922 by this company for the manufacture of paintings on the reverse of glass, backed by butterfly wings. The Patent No. was 202213. This was granted and they made many of these between 1923 and 1939, where WWII brought an end to such frivolity and the company had to do war work. There was a short resurgence after the war, where they were sold on Cunard liners. The paintings signed by Dorothy Buckley and Daisy Smith appear to have more value.
Some of the paintings were framed in wood, and some supposedly in silver, according to an online guide written by someone who had visited Shiptons and seen samples of the paintings and, in fact, the workshop where they were made. This one is in its original frame, which we thought to be pewter, possibly lacquered.
Image size: 15 5/8" x 8 5/8" - 39.7cm x 21.9cm
Frame size: 16 1/2" x 9 1/2" - 41.9cm x 24.15cm
Condition: Very good. At some stage in the past, the frame appears to have received a slight knock on the top right hand corner and just below it and on the edge of the picture, a small piece (1.5cm long) of the black paint seems to have become detached from the glass, although it is still in situ, it is just not touching the glass. As the picture is still in its original frame and back, we have left it entirely untouched.
