David Leach - Large Studio Pottery Vase
Sorry, this item is now sold. If you are seeking similar, feel free to contact me with your requirements. Thank you.
To collectors and aficionados of studio pottery, the work of the late and great David Leach (1911 - 2005) will need little by way of an introduction.
Son of arguably the greatest and most important potter of the 20th Century, Bernard Leach, David perfected his own practice over a lifetime and produced wares that both recalled those who went before, yet were also highly contemporary and uniquely his own. He is perhaps most celebrated for his work in porcelain - in particular his incised and faceted bows and for his fine crackle-glaze wares.
This is a stunning example of the latter.
Measuring approx 18 cms high by 19 cms diameter, this is a a weighty and substantial pot.
Handmade from a thick porcelain and covered in a subtle pink/grey glaze, the network and patterning of cracks is superb.
This ovoid form is sometimes referred to an 'ostrich egg' and it's easy to see why.
Fully stamped near the foot rim as shown, this piece dates from 1956 onwards when David worked from his Lowerdown studio, in Bovey Tracey, Devon.
A superb and substantial addition to any studio pottery collection.
