This fine 19th century Kingwood commode chest is a beautiful example by the renowned cabinet makers Edwards & Roberts and dates to around 1870. The commode is in super condition with a gorgeous colour and great detail to the superbly inlaid marquetry panels. The cabinet has a beautiful breche d’alep serpentine marble top and gilt bronze ormolu mounts The piece is in excellent condition with a most pleasing colour. This is stamped to the drawer inner edge with the cabinet makers name.
Founded in 1845, Edwards and Roberts became synonymous with high quality antique furniture, both as cabinet makers, producing items to a very high standard using the finest timbers, and as 'Importers of Ancient Furniture'.
Their cabinet makers produced contemporary items as well as reproductions of earlier English and French pieces, favouring Georgian designs and satinwood marquetry. They were also known for adapting and restoring fine quality items worthy of their stamp.
By the late 19th century Edwards & Roberts was one of the leading firms of English cabinetmakers.
