Arthur Hayward Newlyn/St. Ives Arab Watercolour Arthur Hayward Watercolour Newlyn %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
We are delighted to offer this wonderful and finely detailed watercolour by the Newlyn/St. Ives school artist, ARTHUR HAYWARD, who has signed the painting in the lower left hand corner and dated it 1921. The painting depicts the fortified walls of an arab town, with the steps leading down from a high tower to a walkway along the top of the wall. There is an arched entrance in the middle of the wall, through which a man is leading his horse, his very long gun clutched in his hand. There are numerous other figures, clad in arab dress, and the dome and minaret of a mosque in the background. The sky is a bright, cloudless, blue.

This is one of a pair of paintings by this artist that we are listing currently.

ARTHUR HAYWARD, was born on 27th November 1889 in Southport, Lancashire. He initially studied architecture at South Kensington, but gave it up to concentrate on painting. He studied at Warrington School of Art and at Newlyn under Stanhope Forbes, one of the leading painters in Newlyn.

During WW1 he served in the Royal Field Artillery, ending the war as a Captain.

He was involved with the Newlyn Society of Artists, then the St. Ives Society of Artists and finally the Cornwall Group. He was a member of the St. Ives Art Club and Founder in 1924 and Principal of the St. Ives School of Painting.

He was a landscape, coastal, portrait painter in oil and watercolour and a teacher. He is sometimes confused that the artist Alfred Hayward, who also signed A. Hayward, but who mainly painted watercolours in a very loose, washy style. Some of the auction sites occasionally list some of these watercolours under Arthur Hayward, in error.

He exhibited 19 paintings at the Royal Academy between 1920 and 1940, 5 at the Royal Oil painters Institute, the Royal Scottish Academy, the Paris Salon, the Newlyn Art Gallery and the St. Ives Porthmeor Gallery.

There are 7 of his paintings in the National Collection, at Wells City Council, Leamington Spa Art Gallery and Museum, Michelham Priory (2), a self portrait at the National Portrait Gallery, Gregynog Hall, and Christ Church University of Oxford.

He worked out of the Shore Studio in St. Ives, where he lived for a large part of his life. He died c. 1970.

Auction results for works by this artist may be found at artprice.com (113 listings), artnet.com (81), findartinfo.com (40) and arcadja.com (38).

The painting is double mounted with raised insert and newly framed in a dull silver mottled frame, which suits it very well. It is ready to hang.
