Art Nouveau 15ct Gold & Peridot Brooch, FB 1910
Here we have a very elegant Art Nouveau 15ct Gold Brooch with a central Peridot and seed pearls. The brooch has a central bar with the peridot set in the middle surrounded by concentric gold circles mounted with seed pearls. There are two gold swirls and two leaf and flower swirls set with further seed pearls. It comes supplied in a modern gift box.
The brooch is hallmarked for Chester in 1910 and is made by Frederick Banks. Banks was a goldsmith and jeweller based in Birmingham who registered his mark in 1881 and continued working into the early years of the 20th century. Although Birmingham based, all his work seems to be hallmarked in Chester.
15ct gold (62.5% pure) was a British standard in the late 19th and early 20th century that was gradually superceded by the American 14ct standard. Very little 15ct gold was made after the First World War and it ceased to be a British standard in the early 1930s.
Condition is very good with no damage. The peridot and seed pearls are all present and secure. The pin is perfectly functional but could perhaps be straightened a little. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The brooch is 4.4cm long and 1.4cm high. It weighs in at 2.8g.
The hallmarks, on the back of the brooch, are a little hidden by the gold circles but still clear to read. They show the 15 and 625 stamps for 15ct gold, the sword & three wheatsheaves assay mark for Chester, the date letter K for 1910 and the F B makers' mark for Frederick Banks.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the brooch.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
