Fantastic quality antique George III mahogany eight day longcase clock with rolling moonphasefoden, congleton CIRCA 1780.
The four pillar inside pinned countwheel bell striking movement with anchor escapement regulated by seconds pendulum, the 12 inch brass break-arch dial with silvered subsidiary seconds ring and arched calendar aperture to the matted centre within applied Roman numeral chapter ring with Arabic five minutes beyond the outer minute track and signed Foden, Congleton to lower edge, with scroll pierced steel hands and female mask and scroll cast spandrels to angles beneath arch with rolling moonphase incorporating scale for the age of the moon to the circumference of the polychrome landscape painted lunar disc, the case with blind fretwork finial plinths over dentil faced break-arch cornice incorporating arcaded principal cavetto moulding and hinged break-arch glazed door flanked by free-standing reeded Doric columns, the sides plain with conforming half columns set adjacent to the rear edge, the trunk with conforming dentil edged arcaded ogee throat moulding over shaped-top book match veneered caddy moulded door flanked by fluted quarter columns resting on rusticated plinths, the base with ogee top moulding over applied shaped raised panel to fascia flanked by canted angles, on ogee bracket feet.216cm (85ins) high excluding finials 227cm (89.5ins) high overall, 56cm (22ins) wide, 25cm (10ins) deep. Thomas Foden is recorded in Baillie, G.H. Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World as working in Congleton, Cheshire, 1753-85. Having a quality eight day movement striking on a bell with the original weights, pendulum and winding key.
