This is an antique framed sampler. An English, needlepoint tapestry panel, dated to the Victorian period and later, circa 1850.

Bird's Eye Maple figuring to the frame, with ebonised edge

A cheerful dog chases a bird through a riverside scene
Foliate border of alternating flowerheads adds further detail
Named and dated to 1853 by a Mary Ann Shaw
Dressed with hanging wire to the rear for ease of mounting
