An Exquisite Miniature Verge Bracket Clock c1750
An Exquisite George II Miniature Knife edge Verge Bracket Clock by Benjamin Sidey c1760
This lovely proportioned miniature bracket antique clock measuring just 19cm (7.5") high has a wonderful patina to the case and has been cleaned sympathetically to retain as much of the original finish as possible. I have resisted the urge to strip and re-finish the case and II believe that was the right choice for this antique clock. The mercurial gilt acorn finial, feet and brass Binding have aged beautifully and give this clock a look that takes a few hundred years to achieve.
The 7.5cm ( 3") gilt dial has been hand beaten flat, polished on the front face and the hammer marks can still be seen on the reverse, The well made miniature spandrels fit the chapter ring well and the name plate in the tiny arch reads B Sidey London.
The 3" circular five pillar fusee movement has a very well made knife edge verge escapement and is driven by a fine fusee chain. The high leaf count pinions (12 teeth) are incredibly fine and demonstrate the craftmanship of this maker. The fine brass wheels are intricately made with hand cut spokes.
Benjamin Sidey was born in 1701 and became a Freeman of the worshipful company of clockmakers in 1730. He later became Master twice in 1761 and 1789 finally dying around 1790. Not only was he Master twice but was known as a good watchmaker and a number of his watches belong to museums around the world.
This clock has been made to watch standards of the day and show the craftmanship of this talented man, The clock dates from around the time he became master and could have been a celebration piece or special commission With over twenty years experience in restoring and conserving clocks and working on some of the finest and complicated clocks for a select group of the best antique clock dealers in the country.
As well as this, Overton Clocks has now decided to offer our customers the opportunity to purchase fine antique clocks that have been personally selected for their unique or special features. Each clock has been expertly restored to the highest of standards by myself. Overton clocks ensures peace of mind in your investment, by personally offering three years warranty on all of our timepieces.
