Allen Edward Everitt 1824-82 Watercolour Amiens
We are offering for sale this early watercolour by the artist Allen Edward Everitt, which is unsigned but attributed verso, and which dates to circa 1860. The painting depicts an altar in the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Amiens, France and the altar is highlighted in colour, while the rest of the architectural detail is done in washes.
Allen Edward Everitt was born on 4th October 1824 in Newhall Street, Birmingham. He was the son of Edward Everitt an art dealer and the grandson of Allen Everitt, artist and art teacher. He received lessons from David Cox, who remained a friend. He specialised in drawing old buildings and their interiors. In his later years he concentrated on watercolours.
Between 1854 and 1864, he made painting trips to Belgium, France and Germany, so we are able to date this painting to this period.
In 1857, he joined the Birmingham Society of Artists and became their Honorary Secretary. In 1880, he became Honorary Curator of the Birmingham Free Art Gallery, which subsequently became Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, which holds examples of his drawings of buildings in the locality. He also illustrated three books.
He married two years before his death from congestion of the lungs on 6th November 1882 at The Grove, 28 Frederick Road, Edgbaston.
The record price in recent years for one of his watercolours was £9,000 at Sotheby's in 2003. Auction results are available at the usual sites.
The painting is double mounted with wash lines and is newly framed in a 1 1/2" brushed gilt frame that suits it very well. It is ready to hang.
