Alfred W. Saunders 1908-1986 Oil East Anglia
We are offering this tranquil and well executed oil on board by the East Anglian artist Alfred W. Saunders, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner and signed and entitled it verso 'Quiet Evening'. The painting depicts a landscape view in East Anglia, possibly the Norfolk Broads. To the left of the water there are a couple of cottages, with a woman taking in her washing off the line and a gaff rigged sailing barge moored behind the cottages. There are other smaller sailing vessels on the water.
This painting and its companion piece that we will be listing shortly, has a misty quality which is often a feature of work by this artist.
Alfred William Saunders was born on 23rd March 1908 in Hackney, London, but moved to Essex in 1917. After service in the Army, he moved to Wingfield Green, Suffolk and in 1966 a Norwich Gallery started selling his work. His paintings of the East Anglian countryside, with its barns, windmills and coasts became very popular and, apart from a brief foray to Australia in the mid 1970s, he continued to paint these subjects up until his death on 7th January 1986.
The painting has been newly framed in a 2 1/2" gilt frame and will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
Image size: 16 7/8" x 12" - 42.9cm x 30.45cm
Frame size: 22 1/4" x 17 1/4" - 56.5cm x 44.45cm
Medium: Oils on Daler Board
Condition: The surface is clean and there is no paint loss, craquelure or damage. The frame is new.
