A very original Georgian Tavern Clock by Thomas Green %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
A very original Georgian Tavern Clock by Thomas Green of Bristol, Thomas Green of Bristol worked at Chapel Row, Long Rooms, Hotwells and Portland Place from 1771-1824. Illustrations are shown of longcase and bracket antique antique clocks in A J Moores' 'Bristol Clockmakers' book. Interestingly it states he also worked in All Saints Lane next door to the Rummer Tavern. Dating from the late 18th century, this antique clock is a lovely example of the transition period between the earlier very large dial clocks with profuse Chinoiserie work and the later rectangle cased painted steel dial tavern clocks of the early 1800’s. This example has a more subdued gilt chinoiserie style linework and the earlier bombe base style trunk. In style with the upcoming trends, the maker has moved to the smaller diameter painted dial with integral second beat subsidiary dial within. Thomas Green was clearly an established maker at this point having kept with the traditional substantial “A” frame movement with 14 day duration. Looking at other examples of clocks by this maker shows movements of an identical nature. By there very nature, Tavern Clocks are quite rare. They were placed in public houses on coaching routes and initially had very large dials so that they could be seen from across a yard. As time progressed and fashions changed the dials became smaller and the cases less ornate but one detail that has remained on this clock is the 200 years of life in a dirty, smokey, dusty pub! The finish simply could not be replicated and I certainly will not be cleaning it off.!
The ”A” frame movement driven by its original square lead weight has been fully overhauled and come with a full three year guarantee for your piece of mind.
A rare opportunity to acquire a transition period original tavern clock in a mot lovely unrestored condition.
