A Small English Fusee Drop-Dial Wall Clock

A small therefore very rare, Regency period Drop-dial wall clock with wooden dial.
The 8 day duration, 4 knopped pillar, gut fusee movement with a beautifully made Anchor Recoil escapement. Also having tapered plates and long pendulum with a brass-faced lenticular bob.
Behind a 10" diameter, convex wooden dial that is separate to the surround and retaining its original base paint. The outer divided minute track has diamond shaped hour markings and encircles the Roman hour numerals. The matching, black painted steel hands are 'open crescent moon' style and the polished, cast brass, hinged and locking bezel has a snapped-in high convex glass.
The flame mahogany 'trunked' case has a one-piece, narrow bezel surround that has a well-moulded edge and is pegged onto the backbox, both sides of which have hinged and toggled access doors. The well-figured front has geometric ebony stringing and is flanked with well-proportioned 'ears'. A flat moulding around the 3 sides separates the trunk from the quarter rounded bottom that has a conforming hinged, locking and ebony cockbeaded regulation door. The single key operates both the lock and the bezel release catch.
This is one of the smallest, rarest and prettiest English Drop-dial wall clocks that I have ever seen and, its condition is amazing for its age. I consider it to be a very special find. Also, because of the various features such as the separate wooden dial, it can be dated very accurately.

Condition The clock is in excellent condition throughout. The movement is well maintained and working perfectly with a good recoil to the escapement however, a previous owner has been winding it with a crank key! This has resulted in the front fusee bearing requiring bushing becaused it has been swaged and opened up. NEVER WIND A FUSEE MOVEMENT WITH A CRANK KEY, especially if it has strong mainsprings. The dial is excellent and retains its original base paint. The case is also excellent and is well polished. Every aspect of this little clock is original, working well and has a beautiful finish with good colour and patina.
