A Rare George II Hooded Wall Clock by Thomas Lock
very original oak cased mid 18th century hooded wall antique clock with alarm by Thomas Lock c1750
The simply made hood case has stood the test of time well and was discovered in a most wonderful dusty condition having been found in a loft. The case has simply been carefully cleaned and has received a welcome coat of beewax.
The 6" 3/4 (17cm) brass dial having engraved spandrels to the corners and the name Thomas Lock, Bath above and below the centre
The tiny four knopped pillar movement has clearly been "handmade" and the plates still bare the file marks made by the original maker. The alarm wheel and hammer staff are held on wrought iron studs and demonstrates a typical provincial makers skills in metalwork. Quite often these early makers were also the towns blacksmith and wrought iron work would have been second nature to these craftsmen.
The simple alarm mechanism is a "held" type where the alarm will sound until the weight hits the floor! the original dome bell is certainly loud when being struck!
I have personally overhauled the movement and have consciously not polished the plates and wheels unnecessarily to retain the original makers marks. The clock comes with a full three years guarantee
These original hooded wall antique clocks do not come to the market often and this is a good opportunity to acquire a living piece of horological History.
The hooded wall clock was the cheapest and simplest clock available over 270 years ago, because of this they simply did not last. The cost of repair and restoration would have been uneconomical and they were thrown away or repurposed. Its only now that rare surviving examples are being found and now warrant the work needed to restore them. With over twenty years experience in restoring and conserving clocks and working on some of the finest and complicated clocks for a select group of the best antique clock dealers in the country.
As well as this, Overton Clocks has now decided to offer our customers the opportunity to purchase fine antique clocks that have been personally selected for their unique or special features. Each clock has been expertly restored to the highest of standards by myself. Overton clocks ensures peace of mind in your investment, by personally offering three years warranty on all of our timepieces.
I am a master clockmaker, a Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers and a member of the British watch and clockmakers guild. Overton Clocks is a traditional clock shop based in the heart of Chesterfield on two floors hosting a showroom and in-house fully equipped workshop.
