19th Cent Moon Phase 8 Day Longcase / Grandfather
A pretty little moon dial longcase clock by Jones & Taylor of Newport, Wales, it dates from around 1850.
The case is in nicely figured mahogany and is in unrestored condition. The hood has a shaped top, spiral turned columns and a pair of smart ball and eagle finials.
The 8 day movement strikes the hours on a bell. It has a pretty painted dial with subsidiary seconds dial, date indicator and a moon phase indicator to the arch.
The case is in reasonable condition but could do with a bit of tidying. There is a shrinkage crack to the side of the base, some veneer chips to the cross banding on the base and the lock is missing from the trunk door. There are no feet at the back of the case which is typical for this style of antique clock as it was designed to lean against a wall.
The movement is running and supplied with pendulum and weights and winding key but could probably do with a service. The moon mechanism and date indicator are working as they should. There is however a problem with the striking train that is lacking the gathering pallet so does not strike the hours properly.
There are a couple of similar antique clocks for sale on line for around £3000 so with a bit of work this could prove very good value.
The maximum dimensions are:
209cm (82") high
54cm (21") wide
24cm (9.5") deep
Free local delivery (40mls), national arranged at cost.
