18th.c. Welsh Longcase Clock by Watkin Owen of Llarwst

1 of 6
Brass faced 8 day longcase clock by Wales’ most celebrated antique clock maker Watkin Owen of Llanrwst c.1780. Lovely Conwy valley oak case featuring a square hood without the architectural pediments found on later Owen antique clocks, with turned and reeded columns and brass fittings. Long door to the case with a shaped top repeated in the ‘slap-on’ plinth panel, reeded quarter columns and particularly good deep ogee mouldings to the plinth. Retaining the original ogee bracket feet. Eight day brass works featuring Watkin Owen’s trademark fifth pillar and striking the hours on a bell. Simple brass face with separate chapter ring, seconds dial and working date display. Original pierced brass spandrels and steel hands. Attractive engraved detail to the centre and clearly named for Watkin Owen Llanrwst.
Excellent condition, the works have been cleaned and overhauled and are sold with a 12 month guarantee. The case has been cleaned, restored and polished in our workshops. Winder and key supplied.
The Owen family of Llanrwst, a small but historically significant market town in the Conwy valley, are probably the most prolific and best known family of 18th century clockmakers in Wales. Watkin Owen (1755-1809) was aged just 21 when his father, the respected clockmaker John Owen, died. After establishing himself as head of the business, he improved and refined his father’s works, adding a fifth pillar to the movement and producing a remarkable number of antique clocks of consistently high quality and reliability housed in excellent regional cases. For more information about Watkin Owen you can’t beat the remarkable study of his output which makes up the bulk of Colin and Mary Brown’s book The Clockmakers of Llanrwst.
Dimensions: height 80″, width 20½”, depth 12″. Please contact us for more images, delivery and shipping quotes. Alternatively you are welcome to view and collect at our large warehouse showroom in Llandudno Junction, North Wales (approximately 45mins from Chester). We have a large and ever changing selection of genuine good quality antique furniture of all types and have twice been shortlisted for the Home and Antiques Magazine Antique Shop of the Year Award. 01492 580022.
