18th - 19th C. English Naive School Watercolour
An Unusual Antique English Naive School Watercolour Painting.
An interesting work, of small proportions but rich in detail.
The scene depicts a rider and a rather bedraggled horse, carrying wicker panniers and passing through a rural / farmyard setting. Two further figures converse at an open window to the left of the image, one of whom appears to wear a 17th century style tricorn hat and leggins.
The backdrop with an arrangement of old barns and carts, with fencing and trees beyond.
This is a very charming painting that has a brilliant naivety about it, yet is also somewhat sophisticated. It is well-observed and the level of detail is exquisite.
The work appears to be unsigned, although the wove paper itself does bear an archaic watermark towards the centre top.
Date: late 18th - early 19th century, no later.
Very much in style of early works by Thomas Rowlandson (1757 - 1827) and George Morland (1763 - 1804).

Condition Some age-related wear and discolouration. This is most noticeable to the sky area which has turned a little 'tea' coloured. That said the image is still intact and reads well across the whole surface. There are a few foxing marks but these are minimal. It remains a charming picture.
