A watercolour “September Afternoon Dartmoor” shows cattle sitting / grazing in the middle foreground with a hilly backdrop - the famous Dartmoor Tor. The painting, which dates from the mid - late nineteenth century is signed by the artist J Barrett. A worn label on the back is from the Mendoza Gallery, New Bond Street London - this gallery closed in 1911. Another label gives the painting’s title and is signed “John Barrett”.
The father of John Barrett (1822-1893) was a renowned artist, as were 3 siblings collectively known as the Barretts of Bath. John’s younger brother painted “The Mission of Mercy: Florence Nightingale receiving the Wounded at Scutari”, now in the National Portrait Gallery London
Size : 21 ins (53cm) wide, 14ins (35cm) high. Gold mount and frame, glazed. I good condition for age. Shop located in Ludlow Uk. Opening hours vary by season so please call first. Email queries will be answered within 24 hours.
