17th Century Oak & Pine Sword Chest / Coffer
This is a small English 17th century six plank oak and pine sword chest / coffer in good original condition with a lovely colour and patina. The front and back panels are of oak while the lid, floor and side panels are of pine. A charmingly naïve design combining chip carving and a punched pattern to form three lunettes with inverse lunettes filling the spandrels is present across the upper half of the front panel, below which is an applied carved rectangular panel depicting a wheel-shaped motif. The chest is fitted with an antique iron lock plate which appears to be original whereas the lid opens on replacement hinges.
Dimensions: Width 94 cm, Depth 40 cm Height 54 cm
Condition: The chest is in good antique condition. Only the iron hinges are later with the marks from a previous pair of hinges clearly evident on the back and underside of the lid. There is abundant evidence of ancient woodworm on the pine lid and side panels but all are solid and secure, and the interior is surprisingly clean and free of old worm activity. The back corners of the lid are chamfered. Please contact us if you would like to see additional photographs.
Delivery: This chest can be delivered to anywhere on mainland England and most of Wales by our trusted delivery man for £50.
