Description:
Here we have for sale a good quality antique 16-inch Seikosha mahogany station chiming / striker wall clock, which has been lovingly restored to its former glory and is now in good working order as can been seen from the photos.
In 1892, Kintaro Hattori established Seikosha in Tokyo, Japan, where he produced his first wall antique clocks, marking the beginnings of a company that was to become one of the world’s largest and most important manufacturers of timepieces.
This antique clock features a beautiful mahogany case, with a moulded brass bezel, a pendulum access door on the underside and a viewing hole in the face of the dial for viewing the pendulum swinging back and forth. The mahogany case has been restored, including French polishing to revive the wonderful dark ebony colour and patination of the grain in the timber. On the back of the clock is a bracket to attach the clock to the wall.
This clock houses a quality double brass barrel spring driven Seikosha chiming mechanism. The clock chimes once on the half hour and also every hour to the number of hours. The dial features two holes: The left-hand hole in the dial face is to wind up the clock movement and the right-hand hole is to wind up the chiming movement. This design gives you the option of either having the chiming mechanism enabled or disabled allowing you to choose whether you want the chiming noise to be heard.
The movement has been restored and serviced and is now in good mechanical order, ensuring this clock is reliable and keeps good time. The pendulum, which is attached to the mechanism by accessing the clock from the door below, can be adjusted in length to allow you to regulate the clock speed. The clock comes with a key, which is used to wind the mechanism through the centre of the face dial.
This clock boasts the original ivory colour tin dial with black Arabic numerals and elegant shaped hour and minute hand. A hinged solid brass bezel houses the glass face that protects the tin dial and face whilst in operation. The brass bezel opens on a right-hand hinge to allow you to adjust or set the time. There is a catch to the back of the clock that locks the brass bezel in place and stops it from accidentally swinging open.
The clock looks great in a variety of rooms from and also in either a traditional or contemporary setting. This truly is a very beautiful 16-inch wall clock of classic styling and quality construction. It will become a member of the family after not too long! So, don’t miss out your chance to own a lovely antique clock.
Provenance:
The story of SEIKO began when Kintaro Hattori, the man who was to become known as Japan’s “King of Timepieces,” opened a clock repair store called Hattori Clock Repair from his home in central Tokyo in 1877. In 1881, at the age of only 22, he formally founded K Hattori, which was set up for the repair and sale of second-hand antique clocks. From then, the foundation of a revolutionary watch and clock making enterprise was built. The company soon developed to become an important clock wholesaler. In 1892, Kintaro Hattori bought a disused factory in Tokyo and Seikosha was formed. In was here that Kintaro Hattori produced his first wall clocks, marking the beginnings of a company that was to become one of the world’s largest and most important manufacturers of timepieces. Soon to follow were the company’s first alarm antique clocks in 1899 as well as desk and music box clocks in 1902. SEIKO continued to grow through the art of watchmaking, introducing many firsts into the industry that has given the company its proud reputation in innovation. Source:
This clock was designed for use in public buildings such as schools or railway stations within the British colonies in India therefore, its reliability and quality of construction were paramount. This clock is of very good quality and it was constructed prior to wartime restrictions being imposed regarding materials therefore, no costs were spared in its construction.
