12” Fusee Dial Timepiece by John Tucker
We present for consideration, this exceptional fusee wall antique clock with 12” dial by John Walter Tothill Tucker, a antique clock, watchmaker, and jeweller of 63 Fore Street, Tiverton, Devon. From where this clock would have been hand-crafted.
Tucker was born 25 August 1792, in Exeter, Devon, into a well-known clock and watchmaking family, (his brother being the respected clockmaker Walter James Kellaud Tucker, of Exeter) and at some stage during the late 1840’s, moved his workshop and antique jewellery outlet to 74 Fore Street, Tiverton.
He eventually retired c1850, moving to his residential home in St Andrew Street, Tiverton, where he passed away on 1 February 1881, aged 90.
NB: On retirement one of Tuckers daughters, Elizabeth, took over running the Fore Street, Tiverton Jewellery shop and two of his sons, (Walter Henry Tucker and John Osbourne Tothill Tucker), followed their father into clock and watchmaking, both relocating to London to ply their trades. (John emigrating with his family to Ontario, Canada, in c1860).
The antique clocks Mahogany turned roundhead face sits over its boxed cabinet. There is a hinged inspection door located to the side of the box and a hinged operable, lockable regulator door located at the bottom of the box. The clock retains its original metal dial, with black Roman numerals, and Tuckers details. The dial is finished with its original pair of blued Breguet Skeleton hands secured with a pinned collet and is protected by glaze mounted in its original brass bezel.
The clock benefits from a fabulous high quality 8-day single fusee driven movement set between 3mm thick shouldered plates and knopped pillars and comes with its 80mm diameter brass pendulum bob and a brass winding key.
A fabulous, well-constructed early Victorian timepiece, of superb order and quality!
