12 Fine Quality Chinese Paintings of Magu & Beasts
![](http://images.antiquesatlas.com/b_sold.png)
![](http://staticaz.antiquesatlas.com/images/loading_new.gif)
A Collection of 12 Very Fine Antique Chinese Paintings on Silk.
Circa 19th Century, Qing Dynasty.
Each study depicts the beautiful Deity of Longevity, Magu, pictured with a different animal or mythical beast. The paintings are rendered in ink and watercolour / gouache onto silk. These silk panels have then been laid down to the paper scroll backing.
The outright quality of these paintings is stunning and each one is a joy to behold. The detail throughout is exquisite and very finely rendered. Clearly by a very skilled hand.
I have 50+ photographs of this fantastic item on file, so feel free to contact me should you wish to see more, or to arrange a viewing in person.
A great addition to any 19th century Chinese art collection, this item is highly recommended.
The theme of each study is listed below and in order of appearance:
1) Magu seated upon a Lion Dog and playing a Sheng or reeded instrument. To the right, a magnolia sprouts from a large red vase.
2) Magu stands alongside an elephant. She holds a large woven basket containing peaches and peony blooms.
3) Magu stands with arms folded and looks down to admire a large peacock spreading its tail feathers.
4) Magu, holding a large ripe peach, encourages a small monkey to climb a red staff. To the left is a woven basked containing a flowering plant.
5) Magu rides a fierce galloping Qilin, whilst holding aloft a dish of four ripe peaches.
6) Magu emerges from billowing clouds riding upon the back of a fierce dragon. She holds a jewelled ruyi sceptre.
7) Magu is seated on a mythical beast, before a large archaic incense burner or oven. The top of her dress is fashioned as a large lotus leaf.
8) Magu stands holding a large peach and looking down to admire a large Red-Headed crane, who stands with one leg lifted.
9) Magu rides in a wheeled sedan chair, pulled along by a white ram. She holds a large length of red coral and is seated before a blue porcelain vase containing many flowers.
10) Magu walks alongside a magnificent, prowling tiger.
11) Magu stands alongside a beautiful peacock. She hold a single peony bloom aloft in her right hand.
12) Magu walks alongside a spotted deer, which carries precious objects for her. She carries a basket of peaches and chrysanthemum blooms over her shoulder on a wooden staff.

Mid 19th Century Antiques Material Paper
Origin Chinese
Condition In overall very good condition.
All 12 studies are in good order and are free from any obvious damage. There are a couple of slight buckles to the underlying paper which extend slightly into one or two of the paintings, but not enough to cause any real problem or distraction.
The silk upon which they are painted obviously has some age-related darkening etc and all appear a little muted. However the paintings themselves, the surface and the detail etc is still all very good.
