WMF Art Nouveau Tall Silver Plated Claret Jug
Attractive WMF Art Nouveau tall claret jug with antique silver-plated mount and engraved glass body c1900. Classic WMF whiplash foliate and floral relief design to the lidded mount and handle. Faceted glass body with tall slender neck. Lightly tinted glass with beautifully engraved decoration of lilies in flower, extending up through the neck. Mount finished in WMF’s antique silver-plate with a lovely, aged patina. Hinged lid with finial in matching relief design. Fully marked to handle ‘WMF’ (export mark used 1895-1903), ‘B’ signifying Britannia base metal, ‘I/0’ (silver-plate layer) and ‘as’ (antique silver-plate finish). Also marked with a six-pointed rosette signifying that this was a 'special issue' - certainly not a commonly seen piece. The claret jug measures 32.5 cm to top of finial.
This claret jug is in excellent original condition commensurate with age. Silver plate in excellent condition. Mount is sound and solid. No chips or cracks to the glass. Very minor surface flaw from original to rear of glass body – which interestingly has been incorporated into the engraved design. Barely visible but mentioned here for completeness. Please see further images on our website as these form an important part of the description.
WMF (Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik) traces its origins back to 1853 when the Straub & Schweizer metal works in Geislingen, Germany was established. They merged with Ritter & Co in 1880 – but after financial problems, joined with the Wurttemberg Union Bank to form “WMF”. From its founding as one company, WMF's growth was tremendous - acquiring more factories along the way, notably including "Orivit AG" and "Orion KM". By the end of the 1900's, they were the world's largest producer and exporter of household metalware. Viewing welcomed - please contact us in advance.
