Vintage Silver Mounted Salt & Pepper Grinders 1979
This is a good quality Vintage Cased Set of Sterling Silver Mounted Salt and Pepper Grinders. The grinders have classic hourglass shape wooden bodies with silver rims around the bases, silver tops and silver finials. The finial on the salt grinder is gold plated for ease of identification. The grinders are in a smart dark blue box with a white satin lining in the lid and a purple velvet base to hold the grinders.
The set is made in London by David Shaw Silverware and dates to 1979. Established in 1973, David Shaw Silverware operated from premises in London's Clerkenwell Road, the City of London's traditional home for silversmiths. They produced a broad range of silverware, mostly for table use, until they ceased trading in 1992.
Condition is very good with both grinders in full working order. There are no dings or dents in the silver and just the overall superficial surface wear that you would expect with use and the passage of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The grinders are each 10.5cm / 4.1ins high and 4.5cm / 1.8ins in diameter. Unboxed, the pair weigh in at 245.9g / 8.6oz.
The hallmarks, on the bottom bands of the grinders, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter E for 1979 and the D S S in a shield makers' mark for David Shaw Silverware.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the set.
